Tears on a Treadmill: Take Two

All evidence to the contrary, I don't often cry at music videos - even sappy ones. And, while my complete inability to run long distances has brought me to tears in the past, I rarely ever boohoo at the gym, in full view of strangers.

Yet here I am, acknowledging my second bout of tears on a treadmill. Perhaps I should avoid CMT while I'm running* from now on?

(
Side note: My ballet teacher told me in grad school that the only time a woman should run is if she is being chased by a bear. I stand behind this statement. My lower half, however, appreciates a little cardio now and then. If you're wondering why I took dance in grad school, ask my co-ballerina Kristen. Then ignore the other stories she tells you about me in tights.)

I'd heard that "The House That Built Me" was Miranda Lambert's best song yet, but hadn't seen the video until I was halfway through a workout last week.

I was plugging along quite nicely when Miranda crooned:
"And I bet you didn't know: Under that live oak, my favorite dog is buried in the yard."
(1:10 mark)

In an instant, that line had me misty-eyed. Then she followed up with this gem:

"Mama cut out pictures of houses for years from Better Homes and Garden magazine. Plans were drawn and concrete poured. Nail by nail and board by board, Daddy gave life to Mama's dream."
(2:00 mark)

Thank heavens the man next to me was engrossed in his baseball game! Home renovations must be a soft spot for me, because there was more than a little chin quivering going on...

What could possibly explain such a public lapse of any emotional control? No, I'm not sleep-deprived, underfed, pregnant or on drugs. (Odd that those things might have similar symptoms.)

Have you seen this video? Would you indulge me with a, "Yes, I find those lines a touch sentimental, too?"

*read: attempting to run, moving my feet, making a valiant effort to burn a few calories

Yes, they're sentimental. And, yes, maybe you should avoid watching CMT while running!

This is one of my favorite songs right now and I tear up, almost every time, listening to it. Miranda is a beautiful singer and this song can hit home to so many people!

hahaha sorry I think this is funny because I will probably cry in just a min when i watch the video. I have a spot in my heart though for homes and places with meaning. I only live in 2 houses with my parents growing up. the first is out in the country and holds most of my childhood memories. We had a creek in the back, a few dogs are buried there, we built dirt bike tracks in the woods behind the house, built mud pies under the porch, played many a hide and seek games in the front yard... you get the idea. Any way Patrick and I drove by it one day when we had only been dating like 1 month. I told him that I had always wanted to see inside since we moved out and I was older. Well he had the idea to go knock and see if we could look around. BAD IDEA.. I bawled the entire time we were in there and just kept saying "Man this is just so weird". He was probably thinking... "this girl I'm dating sure is weird" haha. anyway i am currently pregnant and emotional so I can only imagine how i'm going to respond to this video.
btw.. I've recently started following your blog and really enjoy it:)

I love Miranda and that is one of my favorite songs of all time! I think I've had a few teary eyes over it since it was released! :) And that is my favorite line: Daddy gave life to Mama's dream.

So sweet and beautiful!

This is one of my favorite songs. I first heard it when she sang it live on one of the awards show and my husband was a little confused as to why I was then crying. :) This line: "And I bet you didn't know: Under that live oak, my favorite dog is buried in the yard." gets me every time and each time I hear it on the radio I get a little teary eyed!

This is one of my favorite songs, and I love the video too. I was amazed she didn't write it, she performs it *so* well.

Sending you a smile,

If I had a penny, or just a half a penny, for every time a song, commercial, book, blog, movie, etc. made me cry, I would be a billionaire! I feel your pain! Don't even get me started on what extreme makeover home edition would do to me - it wasn't pretty.

Oh I cry too! 2 years ago I was on an airport shuttle from my hotel to the airport and this woman, a complete stranger, started telling this story. A sweet story that any normal person would say "aw, how sweet" upson hearing. I on the other hand start crying. On a bus. Full of complete strangers. Which I'm sad to say is totally typical for me. Those Hallmark movies, Bethenny's wedding, every wedding I've been in...I'm a blubbering idiot. Haha.

I agree. It's a sad one.. Baby Girl likes to watch country music videos and this one comes on every time. I usually leave the room!
