Nuptials and (Famous Last) Names

We may not have a royal family, but America does have a few top-tier last names - and now two of them are merging. Model and presidential family scion Lauren Bush and David Lauren, son of Ralph Lauren, became engaged recently.

I've long admired Lauren Bush, a young philanthropist and designer in her own right, and can only imagine she'll be a gorgeous bride.

What an affair that will be. Tuxes, ball gowns, security and that guest list! Can you imagine? Politicians, fashionistas and big-haired Texans will be rubbing elbows all over the dance floor.

After these two tie the knot, do we think they'll be known as David and Lauren Lauren? They could go by Ralph Lauren's given last name, Lifshitz, or perhaps she could keep her name professionally?

Her middle name is Pierce, Barbara Bush's maiden name. Who would want to drop that anyway?

No matter if she goes by Lauren Bush-Lauren or Lauren Lifshitz, this is going to be one wedding to watch.

Seriously, though, what are the odds? I know of a Shelly Kelly and an Ashley Ashley, but there can't be too many other double-named gals out there. Bottom line: a guy's last name isn't worth turning down a second date, but it sure makes for an interesting cocktail party story down the road.

It's Official!!

It's official! Prince William reads my blog. Prince William and Kate Middleton are engaged.

Just days after I wrote urging Wills to put a ring on it, he took my advice did! And a gorgeous, meaningful ring at that: his late mother's sapphire and diamond engagement ring.

Side note: Engagement rings are all about symbolism. While I would normally find it off-putting to propose with a ring from a failed marriage, the fact that William's mother has passed away makes it incredibly sweet. Swoon! Not to mention it is such a memorable, beautiful (and sizable!) piece. Well played, William.

Apparently, royal brides also have their wedding bands made from the same nugget of Welsh gold as the late Queen Mother, the Queen, Princess Diana and other princess brides before them. It's all about tradition!

Can we talk about how beautiful Kate looks in her blue (play up that gem, girl!) dress and with those unbelievable locks? I need her stylist's number; it would be worth the trans-Atlantic flight.

Watch BBC footage of the engagement announcement here, but be warned that the flashbulbs and questions are enough to make even a distant onlooker anxious. I hope the royal family coached, counseled and prepared her thoroughly in the two-plus weeks since the proposal.

Evidently "Kate" is now to be known by her given name, Catherine. Perhaps it's more royal? I like Kate, but who am I to question the judgment of Buckingham Palace?

Whatever she goes by, William's future bride handled the press far better than I would at this stage; the couple's answers were rather sweet. I love that William wanted to make his mother a part of the celebration, even though he has spent half of his 28 years now without her. (So, so sad.)

The wedding will take place in spring or summer 2011. If they wait until July, or marry on Friday the 29th of that month, their big day will be thirty years after Charles and Diana's unrivaled ceremony.

So Prince William and Princess "Catherine" will be on hand in 2012 to celebrate Queen Elizabeth's diamond jubilee, her sixtieth anniversary on the throne. If they follow in Charles and Diana's footsteps, they'll also have a baby on the way.

Let's hope that is the only way their marriage mimics William's parents - this couple is too lovely ever to break up.

This news would have been devastating to me at sixteen, so cheer up, heartbroken potential princesses: Prince Harry is still available!

(Tacky thought: Can you imagine the budget of a royal wedding? Eeep!)

If You'll Be My Bodyguard...

Do you remember Paul Simon's "Call Me Al" video? Maybe I'm dating myself, but I remember watching it with my dad as he explained who these two men were - and why the whole thing was funny.

Such an iconic video - I love it.

That is why it kills me that my dad and I didn't think of this genius idea three years ago!

I'm emotional enough as it is, so any slow and sentimental father/daughter dance songs were automatically out. We danced to "Isn't She Lovely," the perfect song for us, but there were no recorders, saxophones or lip syncing involved.

A Facebook friend posted video today of this brilliant father/daughter "dance" at a recent Charlotte wedding they attended. What a treat those guests got!

Think y'all could have pulled off something so silly on your wedding day?

A Presidential Wedding

It's been hard to miss the coverage of Chelsea Clinton's upcoming wedding.

Electricians in tuxes? Widened driveways for heavy limo traffic? Heated port-a-potties? (This time of year?) That's quite a wedding!

But dodging the press after a pre-wedding pedicure? Less than enviable.

I can't imagine how it would feel to have your every wedding detail leaked to the press - and now to the public as well. As a woman who's guarded her privacy this long, Chelsea deserves to celebrate such a personal moment without helicopters buzzing about overhead.

Throughout history, the nuptials of First Daughters have been newsworthy affairs. The most recent of these weddings was not nearly as covered up in paparazzi, though.

I loved the feel of Jenna Bush's wedding to Henry Hager two summers ago at the President's ranch in Texas. The big stone cross, an heirloom diamond, a low-key location, exchanging vows on your family's land. And the flowers? Jenna, you had me at "hydrangeas."

The First Twin pulled off an intimate ceremony, keeping the press at bay and managing media hysteria by releasing several official photographs.

As far as I can tell, she had the best of both worlds - a wedding at home surrounded by guests of her choosing, also celebrated tastefully by the media with a few hand-picked shots.

Despite the buzz around Chelsea Clinton's guest list (Tom Hanks, Barbra Streisand) and the over-the-top details of her reception, I'm crossing my fingers she can have a quiet, meaningful ceremony. I hope for her what we all hope for every bride - that the day turns out just as she'd wished.

It's probably best that President Obama has said he was not invited; maybe that will keep just one or two photographers in D.C. for the weekend. He's right when he says the Secret Service manpower would be unfathomable. And so would the TMZ-style coverage.

What's more your taste? Hair-down, dad-in-a-suit ranch wedding or a glamorous, flashbulb-filled New York affair?

A Long Charleston Weekend

B and I just got back from a long, lovely weekend in Charleston, our first away from Mac. Friday we drove down to Columbia to drop him off with my parents. (Wait 'til you see the pictures my parents took of him; there has never been a happier boy!) The next morning we rose with the sun to tell Macky goodbye and sneak off to Folly Beach.

After a full day on Folly, B and I spent Sunday in downtown Charleston. We started with a breakfast at the marina and ended with the gorgeous wedding of our friends Heather and Ben.

If you've ever seen the Citadel's Summerall Chapel or a reception at Lowndes Grove, you know what a treat the evening was. Add dozens of wonderful Clemson friends and it was a night well spent!

A mid-blink picture, but a stunning backdrop!

Every last detail was perfect!

Sorority sisters with the bride

B snapped a pic of my baby bangs trying to stay incognito - much appreciated!

Today we celebrated Memorial Day with more time in Charleston and a delicious lunch with old friends at Rue de Jean. Not traditional "burgers and hot dogs" American fare, but yummy all the same!

After a slooooow trip back up I-26 in the rain, we picked up Mac and headed for home. Now the baby's in bed, supper's on the table (late) and we're off to begin another week.

Hope you had a moment today to be grateful for the many sacrifices of our armed services and their families. Happy Memorial Day!!

Two years ago today...

Kristen and her bridesmaids

Two years ago today I was in Charleston for my best friend Kristen's wedding. There was pure romance, not to mention Fashion Week and the first hints of spring, in the air. From start to finish, it was absolutely perfect.

Mr. and Mrs. Gamecock

Kristen was a gorgeous bride and we really thought this pair couldn't be any happier - but we were wrong. Now Mr. and Mrs. CEW, Jr. are expecting little Mr. CEW, III. I'm so excited for them and can't wait to celebrate at her baby shower in just a few weeks.

For now, happy, happy anniversary to my bestest and her sweet husband! I was so thrilled to be a part of your wedding and I can't wait to welcome your beautiful boy to the world this summer. We love you!

A new trend in wedding dresses?

Take a look at this piece in a NYT blog about Ivanka Trump's lovely and modest wedding dress. Her new husband, Jared Kushner, is orthodox and Ivanka recently converted, thus the need for something a bit more covered-up. Vera Wang made Ivanka's gown, inspired by Grace Kelly's, and I think it's so pretty!

The bigger question raised, however, is whether or not strapless wedding dresses are on their way out... I can't think of a bride wearing sleeves in the last ten years and am interested to see if my strapless dress wedding photos are soon going to look dated. Thoughts?

P.S. You have to read about the lace on this dress; I bet it was just gorgeous in person. You can see larger and more photos here.

Hello, Loves!!

Hi friends!! How it's been a month since I've written I will never understand...something about days passing more quickly in summer than any time of year. (Of course, counting your life week by week as we pregnant folk are known to do can make a year fly by pretty quickly as well!)

I've thought about writing so many times but haven't put invisible pen to virtual paper for a few reasons - so I just wanted to check in and see how you ladies were doing. (And also because y'all have been sweet enough to check on me and I want you to know that things are going wonderfully!)

In June I instituted an "e-free evenings" policy to see what life would be like without my ever-open laptop habit. It was fantastic! There was more cooking, tackling tasks around the house, reading, relaxing and hanging out with the boys. Not bad for week nights! It definitely makes my evenings feel longer!

I do, however, miss chatting and reading everyone's blogs - so consider this a temporary hiatus! We have lots to share and even more updates to get from y'all...though many of you have been much better about blogging and I get lots of great info from that. (Just not in the evenings!)

Here are the highlights of summer 2009 so far:
  • The wedding of our sweet friends Ann and Jon took place on gorgeous Lake Junaluska, NC last weekend. So much fun!
Here we are - Ann and Anne - before her lovely bridesmaids' brunch. Check out the view! If you have to be outside in late June, you should be in the mountains by the lake. Just beautiful!
  • I'm 25 weeks along and growing bigger by the moment! Still feeling fabulous, enjoying long Sunday naps after church and trying to stay motivated to work out in the crazy summer heat.
  • Bradley and I enjoyed a remarkably quiet Fourth of July weekend - no traveling, no stress. Hope you had lots of fun - maybe a few cold beverages, some fireworks and splashing around in a large body of water?
Expect just a smidge more of a hiatus but I'll be back later this month with lots of updates - our anniversary, my birthday, the quickly-approaching due date of Baby Boy Smith.

Also expect more reading and commenting from me - I may not be writing but I promise I'm thinking of y'all and wishing you a fabulous summer!
xoxo,
A.

Happiness is...

  • A beautiful family wedding in Charleston!
  • A sanctuary full of beaming faces in the oldest (gorgeous!) Baptist church in the South.
  • My very first sister-in-law.
  • A full, gorgeous week at the beach.
  • Shrimp, grits, shrimp and grits, and any other possible seafood combination Charleston has to offer.
  • Early morning bike rides (yes, me!) and walks to the ice cream stand. Ahh.
  • SPF 70 on my face to stave off sunburn - and it worked!
  • Watching Blue play in the waves as he experienced something new - the ocean!
  • Being pretty darn convinced that if dogs could grin, he was doing just that the whole time.
  • Sipping Sprite on a rooftop deck with my two favorite boys. One furry and one suntanned.
  • Feeling our baby boy move for the first time...together. Pretty soon I'll have three favorite boys.
  • Waking up by choice or sunshine, not an alarm.
  • Crossing the halfway point to meeting baby Grapenut - 20 weeks down, 20 to go!
  • Dancing with my husband at two weddings in two weekends.
  • Laughing at him for wearing a Friday night suit then two Saturday tuxes in a row - and six days of shorts at the beach in between to "balance it all out."
  • Finally coming home to a (relatively) clean house.
  • Putting off the unpacking. Why did we bring so much anyway?
  • Happy faces to greet me at work; it's nice to be missed!
  • So You Think You Can Dance waiting on my DVR.
  • Our perma-frigid office feeling just right on a ridiculously hot summer day.
  • Closing the laptop for the evening.
  • Blue at my feet, pasta on my plate, B home and right next to me.
  • Catching up on all the blog reading I've been missing - so glad to be back, friends!! xo

Questions

Could you make it tomorrow morning already? I'm too excited to sit still tonight - tomorrow morning we get to see our sweet Grapenut again... And hopefully find out if we're having a boy or a girl!! I can't wait!

Unfortunately, that has seriously detracted from my ability to focus on ANYTHING else this week - and particularly tonight. So instead of stringing words together in sentences, the best I can do for you tonight is ask some questions. I suppose the first question should be: will you indulge me?? Here we go...

Could we stop talking about Jon and Kate and start thinking about the, you know, eight? Now her brother and sister-in-law, who have appeared on the show babysitting and seeming sweeter than pie, are talking to the media about their impending split and the fact that their family is in shambles. How is this helpful? Who thinks it's doing their family a favor by putting them back on the tabloid covers? Sad...

It's that time again, ladies - wedding season! While I can't squeeze into every cocktail dress I'd love to wear this season, I'm still excited at the possibility of pretty accessories to spice up the two or three maternity dresses I'll be rotating.

I love these! Could I please have 'em?
Maybe a size up for this particular long, pregnant summer?

I'd love to see this light yellow paired with a gorgeous blue cocktail dress. Anyone up for it?

You know I love pink! Too girly? What would you wear these with?

Maybe these?

And these?

Do these shoes remind anyone else of the mid- to late-nineties? Are y'all sporting these and I'm just holding on to an unfair chunkier heel grudge?
Does one really need a satin gala tote? What does J Crew think we'd keep in this??
Wouldn't a pretty clutch suffice?

Would this sink or swim in real life? Picture someone (non-pregnant, of course...) wearing it at a wedding. Do you love it?

Would this?? For a wedding in warm blush or bridal ivory?

(Can you tell I've been visiting J Crew a lot lately?? Can I start getting some free stuff, J Crew?)

One final question, only loosely related to wedding season. The least relevant and most puzzling newlyweds I'm aware of...

My question is simple: Really??

April 26, 2009

Hmm.

Happy as I (typically) am to see two young people in love, I'm a bit confused as to why anyone would want to marry Spencer Pratt. Unless he's a brilliant, Oscar-caliber character actor - in which case, wed away!

If, however, his personality as conveyed through the 10,000 media ops he wrangles daily proves to be accurate... Um, I recommend a good night's sleep and a long talk with your mom. Or a qualified therapist.

Big Weekend Ahead

Although I'm looking very much forward to seeing B tomorrow morning after a week of his working nights, the big weekend ahead will actually be my parents'.

Mom and Dad will be celebrating both Father's Day and their thirtieth anniversary while they're at the beach this week. (And Flag Day on Saturday if they can muster up the enthusiasm for three holidays in as many days.)
A very happy Father's Day to my fantastic dad, who has been all I could have asked for and more during my first year of marriage - and always. He is the giver of sound advice, the voice of reason, the keeper of secrets, the finder of good directions, the translator of estrogen-speak, the practical side of our family. Wish I could be there to tell him in person on Sunday!

On the 17th, I'll be sending a huge happy anniversary to my amazing parents. They were married three months after their first date and have been getting to know each other, on a daily basis, ever since.

In thirty years, they have lived on two continents and in four states, raised two children and two dogs, gained a son-in-law, lost three parents, conquered cancer, survived their daughter's wedding and awkward adolesence, seen (some of) the world and proved that there is such a thing as a happy ending. It just happens to be a choice that happens every day.

The most accurate way I could sum up their marriage is to tell you that they genuinely prefer one another's company.

Theirs is a remarkable example of a truly happy marriage. I feel so privileged to have grown up in our home; now that I'm gone it feels wonderful to know they still have their very best friend keeping them company. (And they are probably having more fun now than they ever were!)

At a friend's wedding just a few months before I got engaged, while B was far away enjoying the wonders of NASCAR, Dad and I happened upon the topic of marriage. He was probably testing the waters a little bit in his very stealthy, Dad-like way. I still can't relay this story in person without tearing up, so I don't believe I've ever told my mom.

To me, there wasn't enough time in a week to spend with Bradley. I found him even more funny and thoughtful and kind and endearing every time we were together. I could not pull into his driveway or answer his calls soon enough. It seemed, I said to Dad, that the very best thing about marriage would be just a chance to be together more. To hang out all the time. Was that a childish perspective?

In all of his widsom, and twenty-eight years into his relationship with mom, my dad told me that he had never once tired of "just hanging out" with my mom. "There might be times where I don't want to be with anyone, where a day has just been too much and I need to shut the door and close my eyes for a moment. But there has never been a moment when I didn't want to spend time with your mother," he said.

She was across the reception, chatting in her typically energetic way with another group of wedding guests. I got a quick kiss on the forehead before Dad stole her away for a dance and I was left to dab my eyes and count my blessings.

"Mo" and Dad, I love you both so much - keep on dancing! (I'm getting over the embarassment day by day...not that it ever stopped you!)

(If you can't dance at the party you paid for, where can you dance?)

P.S. Neither of you could have picked a better partner!

Sweet, sweet Saturday!

Happy Saturday, all! Sorry for the sporadic posting lately - it's been a whirlwind of a month but I'm thrilled to say it should all be calming down soon. (Thanks for that, Blue.)

So today I'm procrastinating some serious spring cleaning by filling you fabulous ladies in... Ahh, to have something else to fill my time besides organizing clothes and scrubbing shower corners. Sure, it feels fantastic when all is said and done, but there are few things I like less than deep cleaning. A wipe, a pass of a duster, the delicious scent of Febreze and Swiffers - I'm all for that. Anything more than 30 minutes gives me a back ache, a headache and a serious urge for a nap.

We're off to Rock Hill shortly for our adorable friends Tripp and Laura Lea's wedding. Of course it never occurred to me to plan my outfit before this morning, so our guest bedroom is covered in dress options. I found the perfect dress to wear - haven't worn it since my rehearsal dinner last summer and I adore it. (And it still fits!!) The problem? The shoes are MIA and I truthfully have nothing else that will work with the dress... (See below.) What to do?

I think I'll be sporting basic black and pearls...sorry, LL, for not thinking ahead!!

In other news, my unbelievable husband took me to see Sex and the City last night!! What a trooper. I think I was a little let down but I enjoyed each of the 120 minutes we were in there. After the insane build-up and the three year wait, it was almost bound to disappoint - I mean, only two hours with our favorite girls after all this time? If you're a fan of fashion, pretty views, SATC or just a fun summer watch - it's worth your $10. Have you seen it yet? What'd you think?

P.S. I'm taking bets on when my "perfect shoes" will magically appear during my long-avoided cleaning session this week. Monday? Even earlier? Ten minutes after we get back to the house? Anyone know another summer wedding where I could sport this baby? I think we've got a slow summer ahead, nuptially-speaking. Whew. After last year, we could use the breather!!

Saying "I do!"

Those two little words just seem to give a girl an other-worldly glow. Jenna Bush was no exception; I think she looked picture perfect at her Texas wedding last Saturday. Kudos to her for bypassing a public White House wedding for something more personal, meaningful and down-home. (Although, as Kristen says, it'd be really hard to say no to a reception on the South Lawn!)

Another pretty bride:
