Day 19: Luna

Source
Yesterday Uma Thurman, who gave birth this summer and has been photographed with her baby daughter many times since, finally announced her newest child's name.

I'd wonder why she waited so long to reveal it, but I think her child's initials speak for themselves: RAAAFT-B. That's pretty similar to my exclamation upon reading her name in its entirety: Rosalind Arusha Arkadina Altalune Florence Thurman-Busson.

I realize the actress was born Uma Karuna Thurman, but even she was saddled with just three little names. Baby "Luna," as she will be called, might reach legal driving age before she's able to spell each of those inspired selections.

Her older brother and sister, Maya and Levon, won't bat an eyelash at the addendum Luna's birth certificate will require. Their other younger half siblings, via their dad Ethan Hawke and his new wife, are Clementine and Indiana.

Meryl Streep's children must feel like real Hollywood outcasts with their monikers. Ms. Streep, born Mary Louise and called "Meryl" for decades now, has four children: Henry Wolfe, Mary Willa ("Mamie"), Grace Jane and Louisa Jacobson Gummer.

Considering Mamie's headlining a new fall TV show, I suppose their gentried acting background and classic names have served the Streep/Gummer clan well.
Take a look at these other celebrity names, or click my "names" tag below, to see that sweet Luna is in good, if unfortunate, company.

Next time I feel bad that Mac goes by the first half of his middle name, or that Mary Brooks goes by both her first and the second half of her middle name, I'll remind myself there's not an Arkadina or Pilot Inspektor in the bunch...

(And surely using only family names give me a little leeway, right? Or is that what Uma said to herself before shoving all 14 words together and calling it a name? Eep! What've I done?)
Don't forget to leave a comment on Tuesday's post to win a Beaufort bonnet or Beaufort bucket hat from The Beaufort Bonnet Company! The giveaway closes this morning at 10:00 am EST.

*This post is day 19 in my 31 Days of What Matters.

Natural versus "Natural" Beauty

Below please see exhibit A in the case against excessive Botox.

On the left, Rachel McAdams, age 33. On the right, Nicole Kidman, age 44.

Pics via People.

Rachel's skin seems to be looser and (dare I say it) even a touch more, um, lived in than Nicole's.

Mrs. Kidman's forehead is drawn tighter than a drum and I shudder to think of the headaches she gets if she pulls her ponytails back a bit too snugly. (Snuggly? Snug-ly? Whatever...you know what I mean.)

I, like many of us, am completely enamored of Rachel McAdams. I want to be her, something that remains unchanged since my first glimpse of The Notebook so long ago. Considering I cried my way through two-thirds of the film, it's a wonder I saw enough of her to find her so endearing.

Just before Mac was born, her (not so fabulous) film The Time Traveler's Wife was my last movie date with B. And if we're still waiting on this baby a week from now, I wouldn't mind checking out The Vow just to see the movie Rachel's worked so hard to promote lately.

But I digress....

Bottom line: Sunscreen, moisturizer and a few preventative measures I can live with, but denying Botox all the livelong day while bouncing coins off the third of your face that lives above your eyebrows? I'm not down with that.

And there you have it, friends, my weighty thoughts of the day. Back to contemplating world peace now.

Yes and No: SAG Style

Warning: I am currently rocking what a dear friend calls "third trimester goggles." Everyone jogging casually down the road seems to be breaking Olympic records in my eyes. Small girls look downright itsy-bitsy and everyone in the Western world seems fit, toned and on the back end of a very successful fat flush. Call it envy, call it a side effect of the waddle, call it what you will, but it undoubtedly affects my judgment at this point in time...

I'm still not sure why she's walking the red carpet, but Kelly O gets a big ol' no from me. I'm as alabaster as they come, but I avoid dyeing my hair solid gray and pairing it with a white dress for formal occasions.

The color and embroidery are fab on you, Viola, but no. Your girls are behaving here, but in a moment of celebration later (in a picture I'll spare the world), they've developed minds of their own. Makes me anxious for your modesty!

You're hilarious, K. Wiig, but no. I'm not feeling the 1995 choker with that dress. Unless you're pairing it with CKOne and wearing it to the tune of Alanis Morisette's Jagged Little Pill. Ah, the nineties.

Yes, ma'am. Love the blue, adore the waistline, envy the redhead who's pulling it off. Except she probably hasn't eaten in three weeks, so never mind...

Yes!! Gorgeous color and such a feminine neckline. Perfect hair to show it off.

A big no to what DON rightfully refers to as the slit up to her lower abs. No need to hide your light under a bushel, Lea, but an inch of fabric goes a long way...

Yes and no. Adore the impish smile, the pixie hair (so few can pull this off!) and the classic red dress. Not a fan of the red-on-red shoe combo, though. So many other ways to go!

Yes and no. Love the Cary Grant lookalike version of George and the lace all over Stacy's dress. Don't love, however, that she's only known as George's girl du jour. This one's gonna sting when y'all break up by summer and you never get to walk the red carpet again. Get to bookin' yourself some movies, girlfriend!

No. Get your hands on some Chick-fil-A stat; this will put an end both to your razor-like collarbones and your miserable countenace. It's a win-win, Ange!

Finally - a Bump Picture!

No, sillies - not mine. (Hard for me to imagine people would care to see my stomach on the interwebs...) Jessica's!

Does anyone else find it interesting that she quite publicly saved herself for marriage the first go 'round, but is (by all accounts) expecting a baby before round two?

In her defense, it's none of our business if she's pregnant or not. And I didn't pay the rumors much attention (any woman without washboard abs is pregnant in tabloid-land) until this week.

The bump, however, speaks for itself. As do the boots, come to think of it. Eep, Jess. Your name is on an international fashion label; were these Martian boots really the best you could do?

That said, I feel it's wildly inappropriate for an obstetrician to speculate on how far along she is based on the size of her stomach. Whether I agree with his "six months" approximation or not, the very guess from a doctor feels icky, no?

Ladies in the tri-state area, I wouldn't use Dr. Dave David for that reason alone. And also because - Dave David? Really? (I'm starting to feel like Amy Poehler here.)

Hats off to J. Simp, though, for avoiding the mom uniform I've been sporting: jeans with brightly colored flats and a scarf. And a shirt, obviously, but I felt like that went without saying.

I like to pretend like I'm trying, but I'm nowhere near her all-black, space-wedge boot look. And I'm ok with that.

Is this REALLY a question?

Subtitle: Not a fair fight.

Evidently, while I was visiting family the other weekend there was a little ceremony in LA. An intimate affair otherwise known as Kim Kardashian's circus wedding.

Guests were asked to wear black or white, in keeping with the nuptial "theme," and each of the bride's sisters (and mother) wore white and carried white bouquets. Someone was taking this "our royal wedding" concept a little far.

I could rant about the wedding, the lack of a groom in 90% of her pictures (true love!) and the beyond excess of 31 carats on your ring finger and $65 million in borrowed jewels, but I won't. I won't even borrow pics from People, a publication that paid a hefty price to cover the event exclusively.

I will, however, question their sanity in posting this when rating wedding guest fashions:

PIPPA vs. LINDSAY
Really? Is this even a question, People?

In one corner, Prince William's sister-in-law wearing Temperley of London on the way to her sister's evening April reception. Regal, classic and relatively covered up for such a black-tie affair. Dressed to be in the presence of royals and family members alike.

In the other corner, an actress whose only credit that comes to mind is easily is a Hayley Mills remake - a far cry from her appearance these days. (Day Old News calls her "baby grandma;" now I see her as a prematurely aged twenty-something with a knitting needle and a rocker at home. No offense to pretty, sweet grandmas everywhere.)

Y'all, there's no question; this fight was fixed from the beginning. Pippa might be insulted that this is up for discussion.

Lindsay, find your natural hair color, a qualified therapist and a new manager. Then lie low for moment. If you want to emulate Pippa's style in the meantime, do so with a touch less peroxide and perhaps a pashmina. You're too young to look this desperate!

P.S. I miss your face. Your natural face. And especially your face circa your Hallie Parker/Annie James days:

Perfection

I was going to try some awkward "Adele-icate performance" play on words, but realized it's best not to try too hard, as evidenced by Adele herself below.

I haven't watched the VMAs start to finish in at least five years. I'm well past the age of their target audience and don't get as giddy about the over-the-top performance gimmicks or movie tie-ins anymore.

That doesn't mean I don't love a captivating performance, though, and Adele's was perfection. I adore this song, and she seems to be even better live than on my iPod.

My goosebumps had goosebumps.

Give Adele a piano, a microphone and a classic black dress and she'll let it rip. Lady Gaga, I realize this isn't your schtick, but do take note.

In other "wow" news, Beyonce, just moments after announcing her first pregnancy, belted one out and danced across the stage in heels. Wonder if the sparkly tuxedo is a part of her House of Dereon's inevitable maternity line?

Even if her "Love on Top" isn't your thing, be sure to skip to the last 30 seconds and watch the adorable post-performance belly rub as she unbuttons her sequined jacket to show off a bump. (And how proud does dad-to-be Jay Z look? Cute!)

Now I get to compare my pregnant self to hers for the next six months. If she continues to look this fab, I may have to stop checking...

Yes and No

Yes, of course Anne Hathaway admires Duchess Catherine's ladylike style. Who doesn't? (Well, one could argue many in LA probably don't. Too much fabric and not enough peroxide...) One brunette beauty appreciating another - I love it!

I love you, Reese, and I'm glad you're so happy about it, but that stomach tattoo? No - just no.
(source)

Yes, even a little exercise can lengthen our lives! Just the reminder I needed when I find it's too hot to get motivated for a full-on gym showdown.

No, I don't understand why Kevin Federline is still considered news-worthy. Any baby is a blessing, but do we need to celebrate this guy's in People?

Yes, I feel old when I think about how many recruitments have passed since my sorority days.

But no, I don't regret finishing college before every last moment was recorded and shared via the magic of social media.

Ah, the things we do for Greek life. I've sung many a "reworked lyric" in my life and I can assure you they were quite special. Not as special as the rap above, but I admire the dedication of these University of Alabama Panhel Exec members.

(What is it about being in a sorority that inspires us to take the lyrics of popular tunes and shift them around to include our favorite Greek letters? We need to do a post about the most egregious offenses in this category. Surely this number would be included somewhere.)

You know they're getting just as much ribbing in real life as they are online...

And yes, I still have my sorority and Panhellenic t-shirts. Boxes of them. Thankfully I don't have boxes of video like this, though! Whew.

Celebrity Chit Chat

Fact: Selma Blair looks fabulous pregnant. On the Grammys' red carpet, she wore a totally appropriate (age-, event- and pregnancy-wise) dress that looks comfy and flattering. Kudos to her!

Bonus fact: You know how people say everyone has a doppelganger? When you're as dark-haired and pale as I am, you hear a lot of the same names: Anne Hathaway (wouldn't that be fab!), Sandra Bullock (I'll take that) and "you know, that stupid girl from Cruel Intentions."

In other words, Selma Blair. Evidently we favored each other circa 1999, at the first bit of Selma's mainstream fame, but she wasn't a household name quite yet. Hence the "stupid girl" comment I'd get quite often after CI was released. My high school self didn't find the "stupid" part the least bit flattering. These days I'd welcome the comparison!

Fact: Gwyneth Paltrow is aging backwards.

I've been a Gwyneth fan since the 90s, when her appearances in Emma and Shakespeare in Love were at once adorable and enviable. I loved hearing her sing in Duets ten years ago especially. After taking a mommy break a few years back, she's all over the place these days: Glee, Country Strong, her insanely uppity but somehow readable Goop.*

See for yourself:

1990s Gwyneth: Ignore the arm candy and their matching pixie cuts.

Gwyneth now

The woman seems only to get more talented and more gorgeous every decade. Could it be her rarified air/macrobiotic/militaristic diet way of living? If so, sign me up. (But let me visit Chick-fil-A first!)

If you're up for a laugh, pore over Gwynnie's hairstyles from the last decade or two and enjoy the author's commentary. My favorite line: "Gwyneth wore her hair super straight...all while simultaneously contracting her abdomen muscles and silently judging you."

*I call Goop uppity because Gwyneth uses it as a vehicle to proclaim that any mom can and should lose the baby weight. While I love it we can squeeze into our pre-pregnancy clothes, I think it's a little easier for a woman with a nanny, chef and trainer to preach that message. I still heart Gwyneth, but I might not if I had four kids and no time to work out.

Nuptials and (Famous Last) Names

We may not have a royal family, but America does have a few top-tier last names - and now two of them are merging. Model and presidential family scion Lauren Bush and David Lauren, son of Ralph Lauren, became engaged recently.

I've long admired Lauren Bush, a young philanthropist and designer in her own right, and can only imagine she'll be a gorgeous bride.

What an affair that will be. Tuxes, ball gowns, security and that guest list! Can you imagine? Politicians, fashionistas and big-haired Texans will be rubbing elbows all over the dance floor.

After these two tie the knot, do we think they'll be known as David and Lauren Lauren? They could go by Ralph Lauren's given last name, Lifshitz, or perhaps she could keep her name professionally?

Her middle name is Pierce, Barbara Bush's maiden name. Who would want to drop that anyway?

No matter if she goes by Lauren Bush-Lauren or Lauren Lifshitz, this is going to be one wedding to watch.

Seriously, though, what are the odds? I know of a Shelly Kelly and an Ashley Ashley, but there can't be too many other double-named gals out there. Bottom line: a guy's last name isn't worth turning down a second date, but it sure makes for an interesting cocktail party story down the road.

What Big Eyes You Have, Amanda Seyfried...

The first time I saw Amanda Seyfried onscreen, I couldn't get over how big her eyes were. She could probably bat those lashes and get anything she wants, they're so wide and innocent.

It seems fitting, then, that she's playing Little Red Riding Hood in an upcoming film.

When I heard that tidbit, I had visions of tiny birds carrying her cape around the forest as she hummed a maiden-like tune. Not exactly what the preview is showing... This isn't your grandma's fairytale.

Take a look and let me know what you think. Is it a thriller? A romance? A gothic mix of both?

Will you see Red Riding Hood in March 2011?

Swiften-who?

As if Taylor Swift wasn't famous enough, pictures of her stepping out with Jake Gyllenhaal of late should guarantee she becomes a household name.

A sure sign that this couple is on the road to tabloid cover status? The creation of their celebrity mash-up nickname: "Swiftenhaal."

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez started the couple naming craze with "Bennifer." Next Britney Spears married Kevin Federline and "Spederline" was born.

While each of those couples has long since parted ways, the two most famous celebrity couple mash-ups were created by the following time-tested formulas:

Brad + Angelina = Brangelina

Tom + Katie = TomKat

And now, with the confirmation of Taylor Swift and Jake Gyllenhaal's burgeoning relationship, the press is eager to come up with a similarly catchy nickname.

Sadly, I don't think the "Swiftenhaal" moniker is it. Simple is better, but neither "Take" nor "Jaylor" are as identifiable as their distinctive last names. Any other ideas?

While you're brainstorming, what I'd really like someone to figure out is what Jake's sister and brother-in-law, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Skarsgaard, should be called. Have you ever seen so many vowels in two last names? "Gyllengaard," perhaps?

Jimmy + Justin = Hilarious

Have y'all seen Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake's history of rap? Two of the cutest, funniest guys on Earth giving us a walk through some of our generation's all-time favorite rap songs? Not a a bad way to wrap up a Thursday afternoon.

Please enjoy the looks on the older audience members' faces at the end. Is it that hard to sing, "New Yooooooooork!" with the rest of the crowd, older guy with too-tight tucked-in polo shirt?

(Side note: I can't hear "Empire State of Mind" anymore without picturing the cast of Glee belting it out... I should totally have started a glee club.)

If Jamie Lynn Spears Can Do It...

About a year ago, just as I stopped being able to see my toes, I began to realize that "this" was "really happening." Until then, I'd been excited about meeting Mac, but a bit in denial about how that would actually happen. You know, the labor and delivery part.

Two particular verses carried me through anxious moments during my third trimester. I felt such a peace about the health of our baby and about the capable hands (earthly and heavenly) that carried us both.

The thought of labor and delivery, though, scared the fool out of me - so I stopped thinking about it. I skipped the all-day class, as just the thought of taking it made me anxious, and settled for the quick L&D ward tour. I just couldn't imagine how I, of all people, was going to be able to do "this."

My sweet friend Kristen encouraged me with talk of how prepared I was, how blessed, how supported. If other people with less than ideal circumstances could bring a baby into this world, surely I could, too. (I love best friend logic.) I'm guessing, knowing us, that a recap of celebrity gossip immediately followed this pep talk.

The combination of encouragement and Hollywood chatter snapped me out of my anxious funk. And from that conversation, a dazzlingly brilliant thought was born: Jamie Lynn Spears did this. Surely that means I can too!

I don't mean to mock or belittle the youngest Spears. I was as disappointed as anyone to read that she was pregnant at only 16. Sure, I've never met her, but she seemed to be a level-headed girl whose star was on the rise.

Though she became a teen mom, I watched with a strange sense of pride as she refrained from dancing on banquettes in stilettos and a maternity dress; instead, she headed home and seemed to refocus her life on the next phase.

Here was a girl who had a lot of things going against her: age, marital status, lack of education, questionable family role models and the eyes (and cameras) of Hollywood focused on her. But she made it through.

If this scrappy young girl, at 16 and perhaps 15 pre-baby pounds, could come through labor and delivery and live to tell the tale, so could I.

As Kristen and I continued to chat in the coming months, that became our mantra: If Jamie Lynn Spears can do it, I can do it. It applies to so much more than childbirth, too!

Parents divorcing bitterly, spewing lies on the covers of tabloids? Sister wearing jorts and awful extensions as she trots barefoot in a public bathroom? Seventeen-year-old fiance not the guy you need to hitch your wagon to? Unsure how to distance yourself from a sketchy relative? If Jamie Lynn Spears can do it...

I joked often last fall that I was going to tape up a picture of JL as my "focus point" during contractions. (I've only heard about such things, as I clearly didn't read about them. Denial is a powerful tool!) I was going to repeat to myself throughout labor, "Jamie Lynn did this. Jamie Lynn did this. Jamie Lynn did this."

When push came to shove (no L&D pun intended), I didn't lean on Jamie Lynn Spears for support. My husband, my nurses, my Creator and, at the last minute, an anesthesiologist took wonderful care of me.

But after I got home with Mac, bleary-eyed and wondering if I'd ever master motherhood, I'd remind myself that somewhere, Jamie Lynn Spears had already done this. And if she could, well, what excuse did I have?

JLS with her toddler daughter Maddie

I'm only half serious when I say this, as I wish Jamie Lynn all the best. But, friends, is there something you're scared to do? Repeat after me: If Jamie Lynn Spears can do it...

If all else fails, call Kristen. She can pep talk you into believing you're ready for anything!

Jordan Catalano = Tim Riggins

In 1995, Jordan Catalano was the stuff dreams were made of - in my middle school, at least.

Brooding, blue-eyed and misunderstood, Jordan was the enigma who captivated My So-Called Life's Angela Chase. And every female primetime viewer between the ages of 12 and 22.

The moment Jordan finally held Angela Chase's hand in the hallway was life-changing.

My ears have yet to recover from the estrogen-fueled shrieks emitted by my English class as we watched it. (How we got to watch this during classtime I'll never understand.)

Seeing it at twenty-something is decidedly less momentous, but it's a nostalgic flashback nonetheless. Fifteen years later, you can even buy a t-shirt declaring your love for the erstwhile Jared Leto. (Who has since gotten really weird. RIP, Jordan Catalano.)

Or you could just tune into Friday Night Lights, where Tim Riggins has been sulking and skipping class since 2006. Could he be Jordan Catalano for a new generation?

I'm several years late to the FNL frenzy, but after hearing lots of watercooler buzz, I sat down with B last month to give it a whirl.

Two weeks (and nearly two full seasons) later, I've concluded that Tim Riggins is Jordan Catalano: Popular but still an outsider. Avidly avoids academics. Same hair, same absent parents, same questionable evening activities. Even more heart, athleticism and chivalry, though, so ladies beware.

And if you think about it, Tim Riggins is really just a younger (and less stranded-on-an-island) version of LOST's Sawyer.

Gruff with a heart of gold. Ladies' man with a clever nickname for everyone. No stranger to a bar fight. Hair that always looks like it could use a wash. Endearing smirk and easy to forgive.

I haven't finished FNL yet, so I'm still wary of any trips to Sydney for our favorite Dillon Panther. If he buys a flight on Oceanic 815, I think we know what comes next...

A Presidential Wedding

It's been hard to miss the coverage of Chelsea Clinton's upcoming wedding.

Electricians in tuxes? Widened driveways for heavy limo traffic? Heated port-a-potties? (This time of year?) That's quite a wedding!

But dodging the press after a pre-wedding pedicure? Less than enviable.

I can't imagine how it would feel to have your every wedding detail leaked to the press - and now to the public as well. As a woman who's guarded her privacy this long, Chelsea deserves to celebrate such a personal moment without helicopters buzzing about overhead.

Throughout history, the nuptials of First Daughters have been newsworthy affairs. The most recent of these weddings was not nearly as covered up in paparazzi, though.

I loved the feel of Jenna Bush's wedding to Henry Hager two summers ago at the President's ranch in Texas. The big stone cross, an heirloom diamond, a low-key location, exchanging vows on your family's land. And the flowers? Jenna, you had me at "hydrangeas."

The First Twin pulled off an intimate ceremony, keeping the press at bay and managing media hysteria by releasing several official photographs.

As far as I can tell, she had the best of both worlds - a wedding at home surrounded by guests of her choosing, also celebrated tastefully by the media with a few hand-picked shots.

Despite the buzz around Chelsea Clinton's guest list (Tom Hanks, Barbra Streisand) and the over-the-top details of her reception, I'm crossing my fingers she can have a quiet, meaningful ceremony. I hope for her what we all hope for every bride - that the day turns out just as she'd wished.

It's probably best that President Obama has said he was not invited; maybe that will keep just one or two photographers in D.C. for the weekend. He's right when he says the Secret Service manpower would be unfathomable. And so would the TMZ-style coverage.

What's more your taste? Hair-down, dad-in-a-suit ranch wedding or a glamorous, flashbulb-filled New York affair?

Déja Vu

Three years ago this week, B and I were on a delightful tropical getaway celebrating our newly matching last names and left-hand rings. I have few specific memories besides hammocks, the smell of sunscreen and umbrellas in my drink - with one notable exception.

After catching a glimpse of this mugshot on our television, I remember walking over and turning it off quite forcefully. Why bog down my honeymoon with unhappy news?

Lindsay in 2007
Lindsay Lohan had been arrested for DUI - again. It made me particularly sad remembering how much I'd loved her version of The Parent Trap.

What a precious young girl; she gave Hayley Mills' original a run for its money. (Though if you haven't seen the original, you must!) Lindsay looked a lot happier in her Disney days.

After intentionally turning off that 2007 news report about her arrest, I've tried to avoid as much coverage as possible as Lindsay has continued her tailspin....

Today, though, CNN seems obsessed with covering the Earth's most important story ever in the history of time: Lindsay Lohan's visit to prison. Part deux.

(Even Lindsay seems ashamed of the hype.)

I looked at the date this morning and realized that it's been exactly three years this week since I averted my eyes. The story doesn't seem to have changed, much like those soap operas our babysitters let us watch as children; I bet we could tune back in now and still follow the storylines.

It can be considered odd to care about a person you've never met, but for her sake, I hope Lindsay's downward spiral stops here. And for my sake, I hope the media's obsession with it does too.

Tomorrow, B and I will celebrate a very happy anniversary. Lindsay's anniversary, I fear, is not nearly as happy an occasion. Here's to the last of your arrests, erstwhile Hallie Parker/Annie James!

Count Me In

Word on the street says that Meryl Streep and Tina Fey could be playing mother and daughter in an upcoming film, reportedly to be directed by Stanley Tucci. I don't need a movie title, plot synopsis or even show times - buy me a front row ticket on opening night and count me in.

Could you have two more talented women headlining a film? They don't exactly look related, but have you seen my red-haired, green-eyed peanut of a mom? Or my blonde, blue-eyed son? Anything's possible...

Does this news make anyone else really excited?? It's always refreshing to see talent be complemented, not replaced, by good looks. Hope the movie's content goes the same route.

Can't wait to see what's in store!

If You're a Bird, I'm a Bird

If Noah and Allie can't be together, I'd say Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams make a pretty cute substitute, wouldn't you?

Ten years ago I loathed her (character) on Dawson's Creek, but she grew on me in later days and, obviously, has my heart now as a single mom to the late Heath Ledger's little girl.

And Ryan? Well, hasn't he always had our hearts?

(I love you, B. I do. But you know how I feel about that movie...)

Emma Style

I've been a "Gleek" for nearly a year now, ever since the preview of the series premiere episode aired last summer. Glee's resident lovelorn sweet pea, Emma Pillsbury, always looks adorable -prim, proper and totally feminine. I'd love to switch wardrobes with her!

From Fox

Though some might consider her fashions a little schoolmarmish, I find her combination of ruffles, bows, cardigans, pins and pencil skirts to be absolutely endearing. She has a very buttoned-up, vintage feel and mixes in pretty, old-fashioned accessories in unique color combinations.

If I lived off of a (television) high school guidance counselor's budget, I would clean out her closet and jewelry box in a flash. (Glee's wardrobe department must be betting on the audience's total suspension of disbelief, because most public school teachers are not dressing like this....)

Take a peek at a few of my favorite Emma ensembles:

From Polyvore

From Polyvore

Emma is a girl after my own heart, a lover of cardigans in every color. I'm inspired both by her monochromatic outfits and her distinctive flair for pairing shades. (And by her, obviously I mean the talented team of stylists who prepare her looks.)

Mad Men's Joan Holloway and Betty Draper are on vacation 'til August, but Emma Pillsbury has filled their high heels quite nicely. I'm loving this stylish guidance counselor's look.

Do you have any TV style icons? Are you a cardigan fan, Emma lover and closet Gleek too?
