In my many volunteer hours at the Junior League's Nearly New Shop, I purchased more than my fair share of "summer reading" books. I have just finished The Memory Keeper's Daughter and now have way too many choices for what comes next.
I'd love to get started this weekend in some scheduled "down time" - isn't that an oxymoron? We have a long weekend at the lake planned for July 4th, so I hope to tear through a few of these then as well.
What book should I start first? This is the most pivotal vote you'll cast all year, no doubt.
The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory
The Pilot's Wife by Anita Shreve
Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen
The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd
The Book of Ruth by Jane Hamilton
The Virgin Blue by Tracy Chevalier, author of Girl with a Pearl Earring
My Antonia by Willa Cather
Wuthering Heights* by Emily Bronte
Jane Eyre* by Charlotte Bronte
I think there are a few more in my stack, so I may be updating this list soon. Can't wait to hear your feedback!!
*I've read these, but not in several hundred years.

I overwhelmingly vote for the Secret Life of Bees. It is one of my all time favorites- it is a little like to kill a mockingbird with many other classics thrown in. It is a quick, but super insightful and heartwarming read. I miss you and hope to talk soon!

The Secret Life of Bees is on my list too. Although I read My Antonia close to ten years ago, I remember it being touching and beautifully written. I am so glad that your list is one of substance! I will never get back the hours I spent reading Lauren Weisberger's "Chasing Harry Winston." Seriously, pass on that one.
One more thing - I really wish you were here to join my book club. :(
I vote for Water for Elephants( you will read this in two days at the lake) and the Secret Life of Bees (Sue Monk is a TCU graduate so she digs the horned frogs.) Either one is great!
I vote for The Secret Life of Bees followed by My Antonia.
What did you the of The Memory Keeper's Daughter? I loved it!
Secret Life of Bees...such a pleasant summer read..,perfect for the southern lady...plus its coming out in a movie soon, so why not read the book first (always better, hands down)
I did just happen to watch The Other Bolyn Girl last night on DVD...Decent, worth watching...probably better in text...on the contrary, I also rented Definately, Maybe...not so good. Very Dull and not worth the 2 hours. Love you lots!
I just got the Memory Keepers Daughter from my neighbor and hope to read it soon too, right now its Land of the Mango Sunsets (pretty good so far)
I haven't read any of those books, but I will have to try some of them... Have you read The Time Traveler's Wife? It's very good. Also, A Wedding in December by Anita Shreve. Also, I think you would like Special Topics in Calamaty Physics. I'm also reading Twilight, by Stephenie Meyer, right now, and it's great so far - a teenage romance/suspense. :)
Most definitely Jane Eyre. I read it at least once a year and LOVE it!
Hey Anne! I just discovered your blog and since I love to read I had to chime in on this! Two books I recommend are Peace Like a River and The Last Lecture...I recently ready both of them and they're FABULOUS!
Stacy Edwards :)
ps. hope things are going well in greenville!
